Dress codes

What the invitation means.

Every dress code, from the most formal to the most relaxed, in plain language. What it actually means, what to wear, and what to avoid.

  • White tie

White tie is the most formal dress code there is, reserved for evening events after six, and it means tails, a white bow tie and a starched shirt.

Also: for men · for women

  • Black tie

Black tie means a dinner jacket and a black bow tie, the standard for evening weddings, galas and awards after six.

Also: for men · for women

  • Black tie optional

Black tie optional means a dinner jacket if you have one, and a dark, sharp suit if you do not.

Also: for men · for women

  • Formal

Formal means the dressiest end of the scale, from morning dress at a daytime wedding to a long gown in the evening.

Also: for men · for women

  • Cocktail

Cocktail means polished evening dress a step below black tie: a dark suit, or a dress that reads after six.

Also: for men · for women

  • Semi-formal

Semi-formal means dressed up but not stiff: a suit for men, a dress or elegant separates for women.

Also: for men · for women

  • Dressy casual

Dressy casual means smart pieces without the formality of a suit: tailored trousers, a good shirt, clean shoes.

Also: for men · for women

  • Smart casual

Smart casual means polished but relaxed, a clear step below a suit and a step above jeans and a tee.

Also: for men · for women

  • Lounge suit

Lounge suit means an ordinary suit, the standard day or evening tailoring short of a tuxedo.

Also: for men · for women

  • Business formal

Business formal means a conservative suit, a proper shirt and a tie, in dark, plain colours.

Also: for men · for women

  • Business casual

Business casual means polished but softer than a suit: a collared shirt, tailored trousers or a knit, and no tie needed.

Also: for men · for women

  • Festive

Festive means the room has a mood, so bring colour, texture and a little shine to a party or a holiday lunch.

Also: for men · for women

  • Casual

Casual means no code at all: clean, well-fitting everyday clothes that look like you thought about them.

Also: for men · for women
