Dress code

Formal, explained

Formal means the dressiest end of the scale, from morning dress at a daytime wedding to a long gown in the evening.

Formal means the dressiest end of the scale, from morning dress at a daytime wedding to a long gown in the evening.

Formal is the umbrella over the very dressy codes. It covers white tie and black tie in the evening, and morning dress for daytime ceremonies like a traditional wedding or a formal lunch.

In practice, most invitations that say formal are evening events where a dark suit is safe and black tie is welcome. When a formal invitation names no time, assume a suit and a cocktail dress at minimum.

Formal is about structure: dark, well-cut tailoring, polished shoes and restrained colour. It is the opposite of relaxed, so leave the casual pieces at home.

The rules

  • ·Go dark and tailored; in the evening add a bow tie or a long gown.
  • ·Daytime formal means a dark suit or morning dress, not a tuxedo.
  • ·Polish the shoes and hold the palette to two or three tones.
  • ·When in doubt, dress at the level of black tie.
