What to wear to a winter wedding

For a winter wedding, go richer in fabric and deeper in colour, and treat a warm coat or wrap as part of the outfit rather than something to hide.

What to wear to a winter wedding

5 min read

A winter wedding is the most forgiving season for guests who like dressing up. Velvet, wool and deep colour are all in your favour. The only real problem is the cold.

Plan the whole outfit around being outside briefly and indoors for hours.

Richer fabric, deeper colour

This is the season for velvet, wool crepe, heavy silk and brocade. Colours run deep: emerald, burgundy, midnight, chocolate. Jewellery reads better against these than against summer pastels.

The layer is part of the look

Choose a coat, a long wrap or a fine knit that you would wear on its own, because you will wear it for much of the day. A shawl you only meant to hold is a shawl you will resent by the evening.

Shoes and the cold walk

Ground in winter is cold and often wet. A closed shoe or a boot beats a sandal or a strappy heel, and it will look more deliberate with the weight of a winter outfit anyway.

The takeaway · Go richer in fabric, deeper in colour, and warm in the layer you actually wear.
