Winter dressing goes wrong in one of two ways: not warm enough, or so padded that the outfit disappears. The fix is the same in both cases, which is to think from the inside out.
The layers closest to your body do the warming. The outer layer does the shape.
The base layer is the one people see
Start with a fine, warm first layer: merino, a good cotton knit, a thermal tee if the day demands it. Indoors you will be in this layer alone, so it has to look like an outfit, not underwear.
Cold-weather colour
Deep, quiet colour reads well and hides the winter grime: charcoal, navy, chocolate, forest, cream. One warm accent, camel or rust, stops the whole thing going flat.
Keep the line
A long, clean coat does more for how you look than any amount of layering underneath. Pick the coat for silhouette, then keep what is under it close to the body so the shape holds.
For feet, a real boot with a grippy sole. For hands and neck, one good accessory each, not three.
The takeaway · Put the warmth in the base layer and the shape in the coat.
