An autumn wedding asks more of a guest than a summer one. The ceremony may be outdoors, the evening will be cold, and the photographs will remember whatever you wear.
The dress code on the invitation still leads. Season only adjusts the colour, the fabric and the layer.
Colour and fabric that belong to the season
Deep and muted tones sit right: forest, burgundy, navy, chocolate, rust. Lighter summer pastels can look out of step, though a cream base under a deep layer still works.
Weigh the fabric for warmth without weight. Wool crepe, velvet and heavier silk hold the season; thin cotton and linen do not.
The layer you plan on wearing
Assume you will keep a layer on for much of the day. A tailored coat, a wrap or a fine knit that reads as part of the outfit beats a jacket you only meant to hold. Leaving white, cream and ivory as the main colour is still the rule.
Shoes and the long day
Choose a shoe that handles grass, gravel or a walk between venues. A block heel, a boot or a polished leather shoe survives the day; a thin heel on wet ground does not.
The takeaway · Deepen the colour, add a layer you would wear on purpose, and pick a shoe that survives the ground.
