Hanukkah is eight nights, and dress shifts with the evening. A night at home around the candles is warm and relaxed; a larger gathering or a community event is a little more considered.
The register is cosy but presentable. You want layers, warm tones and clothes you can move in while cooking, greeting and sitting.
Cosy but presentable
For a family evening, a fine knit or a soft shirt with trousers, or a midi dress with a cardigan, works well. Warm neutrals and blues are a natural fit: cream, camel, oatmeal, navy and grey.
The blue and white association is familiar, but it is a nod rather than a rule. Any clean, warm outfit reads correctly for a night at home.
Layers for eight nights
With several evenings in mind, build a small set that mixes. One light base and one dark base, two knits and one outer layer, with a dressier piece for a bigger night.
Because the nights run close together, comfort and rewearing matter. Choose pieces that survive a meal and a press, not one-night-only items.
The room, and the frying
Many families fry latkes and doughnuts for the holiday, which means heat, oil and a busy kitchen. Choose a sleeve you can push up and a fabric you are not precious about, then add the smart layer when you sit.
If you are cooking and hosting on the same night, dress in layers so the kitchen and the table need the same outfit with one piece added or removed.
The takeaway · For Hanukkah, dress cosy but presentable in layers that move from the kitchen to the table.
