The Christmas week usually holds several different events: a family lunch, a drinks do, a quiet day at home and a party. The good news is that the same few pieces can cover all of them.
The register runs from cosy at home to sharp at night. Build with warm layers and one elevated piece you can add or remove.
The cosy register
For family lunches and long days at home, choose soft, warm neutrals: cream, camel, oatmeal, forest green or deep red, if you like it. A fine knit, a cardigan and a midi dress or trousers cover it.
Texture does the festive work. Cable knit, brushed wool, corduroy and velvet all read seasonal in a warm neutral without a single pattern.
The dressy register
For a drinks do or a party, keep the base warm and add one elevated piece: a satin skirt, a velvet blazer, a silky shirt, or a lapel pin. The sharpness comes from fabric and finish rather than colour.
Keep the palette to two or three tones so the whole week mixes. A deep green or burgundy accent lifts black and cream without changing the wardrobe.
The week-long plan
Pick one dark base and one light base, and change the layer and the shoe for each event. The same trousers with a knit read relaxed, with a silk shirt and a heel read party.
Give shoes an easy option and a dressier one. You will want the flat for the long walk and the nicer pair for the evening.
The takeaway · Build Christmas outfits from one light and one dark base, then change the layer and the shoe for each event.
