The three colour rule

Limiting an outfit to three colours keeps it calm and deliberate. Here is how the rule works, when you can break it, and how to put it into practice today.

The three colour rule

4 min read

The three colour rule is simple: an outfit reads best when it holds to about three colours, including shoes and accessories. It is not a law, but it is a reliable default when you cannot decide.

The point is not to be boring. It is to keep the eye moving without a new idea every few inches.

What counts as a colour

Neutrals count too, but they count lightly. Black, white, grey, navy, cream and denim are the quiet ones. Two neutrals plus one colour is the safest version of the rule.

Treat a print as one colour based on its dominant tone, or as two if it is bold. A busy floral can carry the accent for the whole outfit on its own.

The sixty thirty ten shape

Give one colour most of the space, a second a good share, and a third a small flash. A navy outfit with grey trousers and a burgundy knit follows the shape. So does cream with camel and a dark brown shoe.

When an outfit feels off, the culprit is often a third colour competing with a fourth. Remove one and the rest snaps into place.

When to break it

Break the rule when the colours are close neighbours, like navy, blue and grey, or when the whole point is colour, like a holiday or a party. Rules serve the outfit, not the reverse.

Monochrome is the rule taken to its limit. One colour in several tones, varied by texture, reads calm and expensive.

The takeaway · Two neutrals plus one accent is the calmest, most reliable version of the three colour rule.
